The "Danubius Award was established in 2011 to honor individuals who have dealt with the Danube region in an outstanding way through their scientific work or oeuvre. The main focus of this year's award winner Prof. Farnleitner's work is in the field of water quality and health with a focus on hazard and risk assessment as well as the management of microbiological contamination in water.

Through his team's work, he contributes to the fundamental understanding of water quality along the entire Danube River and its catchment area. This, for example, through the development and application of new genetic analysis tools to detect the origin of fecal pollution and pathogens in water.

By granting these awards, the BMBWF is contributing to the implementation of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR) adopted by the European Council in 2011.
